DIY: Hocus Pocus Brownies

Who’s ready for some Halloween baking? (I know this post is a little last minute if you have a party this weekend, but hey, better late than never!)

I was recently inspired by Second Star Bazaar’s adorable (and creepy) booooOOOoook brownies. Yes, that’s right, Hocus Pocus brownies! And they’re brownies even Winifred Sanderson would approve of.

Now, I’m not an icing expert by any means, but I decided to get in the Halloween spirit and give these brownies a good ol’ college try. And while my brownies don’t quite stack up to those of Second Star Bazaar, they were still fun to make and are truly delicious (just wait until you try my mom’s icing recipe!).

And if you love themed parties as much as I do, you MUST check out Second Star Bazaar’s Instagram! It’s full of amazing party inspiration.

Shopping List: Hocus Pocus Brownies

Brownies and Decorations:
Brownies
Candy Eyeballs
Black Writing Gel/Icing (*Tip* if tube is small, get two)

Icing (my mom’s delicious recipe!):
1 Stick of Butter
4 Tablespoons of Cocoa
6 Tablespoons of Milk
4 Cups of Powdered Sugar
1 Teaspoon of Vanilla

Directions:

Prepare your brownie batter and pour into a 13×9 pan to bake. This size pan will allow your brownies to be thinner.

When your brownies have about five minutes left in the oven, start preparing the icing. *Tip* It’s best to spread the icing while it and the brownies are warm.

To make the icing, combine the butter, cocoa, and milk in a saucepan. Bring the ingredients to a boil on medium heat, stirring often. Once melted and blended, remove the pan from the heat and add the powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Once blended and smooth, spread/pour icing on the finished brownies while the icing is still hot. (Note- I had extra icing in my batch, so add as much or as little as you’d prefer.)

Let icing and brownies cool. If you have time, I recommend that you let the iced brownies sit untouched overnight. This will help you to cleanly cut them into squares.

The size of your book brownies is up to you. Cut them to your liking, just be careful not to disturb the icing edges too much. But remember, they don’t have to be perfect! I mean, the real booooOOOoook certainly wasn’t.

After your brownies are cut, it’s time for the decorating. Add a small drop of icing to the back of a candy eyeball and place it on the right side of the brownie. Next, draw a circle around the eye with black icing. *Tip* I found that I could do thinner icing lines if I iced faster. The slower I went (in hopes to increase my accuracy), the thicker my icing turned out.

Next, add rounded corners to the right-side corners. Add a line of icing along the left edge for book’s binding and a slightly wavy line (think of book’s uneven stitches) next to that. The finishing touch is really adding small icing lines to represent the stitches of the book. And again, the best part is that they don’t have to be perfect.
