Holiday baking is upon us! Why not gear up for the The Last Jedi with a seasonal Star Wars pie? And believe me, you (and your guests) won’t have a very bad feeling about this pie…
Star Wars Death Star Pie Shopping List:
Crust/Topping:
1 Pillsbury pre-made pie crusts box (includes two pie crusts)
1 Egg white, beaten
Brown sugar for dusting, optional
Pie/Filling:
Baker’s choice! Just make sure you choose a pie which will bake flat and even.
Before you begin, trace the circumference of your pie pan onto a piece of poster board to use as your guide. (Mine was a 9 inch pie pan.) If you’d like, draw out the details of your pie that you would like to include.
Roll out a pre-made pie crust on a piece of wax paper and place your Death Star pie topping guide on top. Using a small spatula or butter knife, cut off the excess dough to create a circle the size of your poster board circle.
My friend, Kendra, who is a pie expert (literally!), advised me to only use egg white on the parts of the crust that I wanted to be shiny after baking. With that in mind, I decided to use egg white to outline the larger features and outlines of the Death Star.
To begin, dip a small, rubber spatula into a beaten egg white and lightly create a small circle in the upper left corner of your circle to create the super laser focus lens. If you’re worried about freehanding it, cut out a small circle in your extra poster board to use as a guide. Once you’ve outlined your small circle in the dough, go back over it several times, adding additional egg white in the crease to help smooth the lines and create distinction when the crust bakes.
Using the same technique as the small circle, draw lines with your spatula (like below) on the pie crust to give the Death Star a rounded, 3D shape. After you’ve traced the lines, dip your spatula in your egg white and go over them again until they are clearly defined.
Add additional details to your liking. I chose to deeply outline the super laser focus lens (in the middle of the small circle). I also added smaller, lighter lines with a butter knife to give the crust a little more detail and texture.
Once you’re satisfied with your Death Star, carefully — I actually mean, very carefully! — transfer your pie crust onto a greased baking sheet.
*Note* If your Death Star comes apart because some of your outlines cut all the way through the crust, that is completely fine! Just place the Death Star back together on the baking sheet and smooth any rough edges.
Bake your Death Star pie crust in a pre-heated oven at 450 degrees for roughly 10-12 minutes.
*Note* Make sure to keep a close eye on your Death Star! I chose to take my pie out of the oven after about five minutes to deepen the main outlines of my Death Star since they were fading as the crust baked. Just go over the grooves with your spatula and egg white again, and then place the crust back in the oven for the remainder of the baking time. (For reference, see photos below of my fading pie outlines.)
*Optional* If you’d like, feel free to add a light dusting of brown sugar on top of your Death Star for a little texture and sweetness.
Before fixing my Death Star pie outlines (below).
After fixing my Death Star pie lines by going over the grooves with a spatula and egg white (below).
Once the pie crust is done baking, remove it from the baking sheet and place it on a plate to cool.
And again, if your Death Star comes apart in pieces like mine, don’t worry! You can put the pieces back together when you add it to your pie.
As for the type of pie you make, that’s the baker’s choice! Just make sure to choose a filling that will bake flat and don’t go overboard with the base crust.
I was in a Thanksgiving mood, so pumpkin was my choice.
Once your pie has baked and cooled, assemble your mighty Death Star, and watch the other pies cower in fear next to this armored space station.
And to go along with my Star Wars baking festivities, I had to wear my new Star Wars Cantina Band skirt from Her Universe. It might possibly be the cutest skirt I’ve ever owned! Just look at that little music-loving Bith!
*Cue Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes.* Let’s get some Cantina Band tunes flowing!
Whether you plan to have a Star Wars marathon before you see The Last Jedi on premiere night (you should!), or if you just love Star Wars and want to bake the ultimate weapon, I mean, pie, for your holiday party — this Death Star Pie is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
