DIY: Harry Potter Howler

Okay Harry Potter fans, have you seen the new Fantastic Beasts trailer?! We got to see Hogwarts again! (Be honest, did you get teary-eyed?) We also got to see a sneak peek of Dumbledore’s and Newt’s relationship, and while we don’t know much about the movie yet, I know one thing for sure, I cannot wait to see it! And neither can my friend Vicky from Vicky Hearts TV. That’s why we’ve partnered to bring you some magical Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts posts through our Wands at the Ready collab — all leading up to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald hitting theaters in November.

Looking for a fun Harry Potter DIY activity for your weekend? Try this origami project to make your own howler! I know you know what a howler is…

“RONALD WEASLEY! HOW DARE YOU STEAL THAT CAR? I AM ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED! YOURE FATHER’S NOW FACING AN INQUIRY AT WORK, AND IT’S ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT! IF YOU PUT ANOTHER *TOE* OUT OF LINE, WE’LL BRING YOU STRAIGHT HOME! And Ginny, dear, congratulations on making it into Gryffindor. Your Father and I are so proud.”

Okay, be honest. You definitely read that in Mrs. Weasley’s disappointed, furious voice!

And just in case you can’t remember the scene…

And now my wizard, witch, and muggle friends, go ahead and put your wands aside. You won’t need them to make your own howler. 🙂

HP Howler

Let me start by telling you that I am NOT an origami pro… at all! But when I found this video tutorial from Muggle Magic, they made it look easy, and I was inspired to try out my paper skills to make my own Howler. (P.S. Muggle Magic has a TON of awesome Harry Potter tutorials! Make sure to check out their YouTube channel for more magical inspiration.)

Now let’s get started. Watch Muggle Magic’s tutorial below and reference their downloadable instructions.

And my finished product… voila! I love it! And it fits in perfectly with all of my Harry Potter items. 🙂

Do you think middle schoolers would be able to do this? I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this to you before but I’m a children’s librarian and have a group of middle schoolers super into Harry Potter, so we do HP events every few months. I think they’d love to make something like this!

YES! I definitely think they could, and they would love it! The finished product looks so good. I made a couple of these, and each one got easier. So if you decide to do the activity, practice it a couple times and then the folds will be a lot easier for you to describe as you lead them through it! I love that you do HP activities with them.

I love this! My friends and I were thinking about having a HP party for the release of CoG and this would be such a fun one. Also I’m much more excited about this movie because we get to see familiar characters and Hogwarts again!

I love this! My husband and I are big HP fans. Maybe we’ll make these together for a date night soon for a fun memory!

I think that sounds like a perfect evening! And it’s a different type of date night (origami lol!) than what you might normally do!

Turned out great. I love the font used for the message. I tried to hand write the one I made but it wasn’t as good as the original 🙂

I’m not the best at handwriting (at all!)… luckily the Cricut came through for mine! lol I also thought about printing it out and just cutting the paper to that size. How did the paper folding turn out for you? That was the harder part for me.

      • June 18, 2018 / 8:54 pm

Actually that was the easy part for me. I wanted to hand write the note so was quite tricky. I used thin sharpies and they seemed to help 😀

Good to know! I need to keep practicing my paper-folding skills!

Def gets easier with time 🙂
