Lara Jean’s Cupcakes

Let’s jump right to the point… I’m currently obsessed with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before! I was introduced to the new movie on Netflix two weeks ago, and ever since, I’ve been hooked. (I may have watched it once, or twice, or three times…)

I’ll be completely honest with you, I’m generally a person who likes to read the book first. However, rules are meant to be broken. I have yet to read the novel by Jenny Han, but boy do I plan to.

If you haven’t heard about the movie or the book, it’s time for you to get acquainted.

Lara Jean is a junior in high school, and like most high school girls, she has top secret crushes. But Lara has a unique way of expressing her feelings. She writes the boys she has a crush on a love letter with her deep, dark feelings… and hides them away in a secret box in her closet. Until one day, the letters are magically (or tragically) sent to her secret love interests. And that’s when the fun begins. Now that Lara Jean’s secrets are revealed, what’s to become of her high school love life? You’ll have to watch or read to find out — and trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

After watching this adorable and hilarious movie, I knew I wanted to do a post inspired by it — and it was pretty obvious that cupcakes would make the perfect Lara Jean treat. After all, LJ loves baking cupcakes for Kitty’s bake sale. Yes, brownies are easier — you can cut them into squares — but she already bought the ingredients for cupcakes.

For my To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before inspired cupcakes, I decided to keep them simple — they’re going to a bake sale, remember? And for their look, I modeled them after LJ’s pink and blue room.

Lara Jean’s Cupcakes // A Recipe Inspired by To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

What You Need:

  • Cupcakes
  • Sprinkles — I chose a mix of sprinkles with light blue, white, and red accents
  • Pink food gel or food coloring
  • 4 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1 cup of softened butter
  • 2-3 tablespoons of milk
  • 3 tablespoons of vanilla
  • Icing decorating bag
  • Icing decorating tip — your choice of design

First, bake your cupcakes. I went with funfetti, because, why not?

Next, prepare your icing. In a large bowl or in your stand mixer, combine the softened butter and the vanilla. Mix until well blended on a medium speed. Next, slowly add your powdered sugar, mixing until incorporated. Add the milk and continue mixing at a medium speed until thoroughly blended. Last, add your desired amount of pink food coloring and thoroughly mix to create an even color throughout your frosting.

Prepare your frosting bag and place your desired frosting tip in the bag. Place your frosting bag in a glass and fold the edges of the bag over the edge of the glass. Fill your bag with your pink icing. Remove it from the glass, pressing the icing to the bottom of the bag. Now, you’re ready to frost some cupcakes.

Note– at first I made my icing smooth and circular, but then I got a little funkier and did shapes that resembled flowers. (At least flowers in my mind.) If anything is true, I definitely think LJ would want you to be creative.

Once your frosting is complete, lightly add sprinkles to your cupcakes. Note — I had a lot of sprinkles roll off my cupcakes, so make sure to do this step over a plate to catch any loose sprinkles.

It may just be me, but I think these cupcakes are going to sell fast at Kitty’s bake sale.

And there you have it! The perfect treat for your next movie night with your girlfriends.

Have you watched or read To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before? Let’s talk all things LJ and her letters! Go light on the spoilers — but what was your favorite part of the story?
