This year marks the 25th anniversary of Hocus Pocus! Between Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, and all of those memorable quotes (and hairstyles), it’s no surprise that this film is a beloved cult classic for so many.
Fun fact — the Sanderson Sisters did not actually start out as an October blockbuster, but rather the Halloween movie was originally released in the month of July!
But whether it’s Halloween in July or October, you can count on our house watching Hocus Pocus (possibly several times) each season. It’s always been one of my favorite Halloween movies, and now as an adult, I love it just as much — if not more!
Last year to celebrate, I made some spooky booOOOoook brownies, and this year, I’ve put together a new Hocus Pocus DIY for a subtle, geek chic Halloween garland that you can add to your fall decor.
HOCUS POCUS HALLOWEEN GARLAND TUTORIAL
What You Need:
- Downloaded files
- Card stock paper — orange, brown, black, yellow, purple, cream
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Yarn or string
- Cricut Explore Air II and cutting accessories (mat, weeder) — please note, if you do not have a Cricut, you can still create your own garland by cutting out each piece by hand
If you have a Cricut, you can access this project on my Cricut Design Space profile.
Download the files in the material list (above) and cut them out at the size of your liking. For my garland, I cut my pieces at the following sizes. For the Sanderson Sister outlines, I cut Sarah (on yellow paper) and Winnie (on orange paper) at 3 in. wide and Mary (on purple paper) at 2.5 in. wide. For their face shapes, I eyeballed the size, cutting them out on cream paper and gluing them to the hair outlines. For Binx, our black cat, I cut him at 3.5 in. wide on black paper. The pumpkins were cut at 3 in. wide on orange paper and the cauldrons were cut at 3.5 in. wide on black paper. For the lettering, I cut the pieces at around 2.5 inches height on brown recycled paper.
Depending on how long you’d like your garland to be, you can add as many pieces to your garland as you’d like. I found that it was easier to hang my string at the desired height/length first. Then, once my pieces were cut, I attached them to my string with tape so that I had the spacing exactly how I wanted it.
Once your garland is assembled, add fairy lights behind the decoration for an extra magical touch.
See? I told you this was an easy DIY! After all, it’s just a bunch of hocus pocus!
P.S. Don’t I have the most photogenic puppy ever?!
