Happy (Marvelous) Halloween!
Let me just start out by admitting that I love fall and I love pumpkins. And yes, like the rest of the world, I bought a few white pumpkins to decorate my front door, but c’mon, after awhile white pumpkins get a little blahhhh!
So I started thinking… I want my pumpkins to be higher… further… and faster. Well, I’m not sure if a pumpkin can really be any of those things, but you know what I’m going for!
With the recent Captain Marvel trailer, Carol Danvers has been on the mind. So fast forward, and here we are with a marvelous tutorial on how to jazz up your pumpkin patch with a DIY Captain Marvel Pumpkin!
I promise, the rest of the pumpkins will be totally jealous.
DIY Captain Marvel Pumpkin
What You Need:
- Cardboard pumpkin (I found mine at my local craft store)
- Red and blue paint
- Paint brushes
- Captain Marvel Star — DOWNLOAD
- Masking tape
- Black vinyl
- Gold glitter vinyl
- Transfer tape
- Cricut Explore Air II and cutting accessories (mat, weeder, scraper) — please note, if you do not have a Cricut, you can still create a Captain Marvel pumpkin by cutting out the vinyl pieces by hand
Let’s make something marvelous!
Start with your cardboard pumpkin. To help create clean paint lines, place a piece of masking tape around the middle of your pumpkin, separating your pumpkin into equal top and bottom halves. Once your tape is in place, it’s time to paint.
Paint the top of your pumpkin red and let it dry completely. Then, paint the bottom of your pumpkin blue and let it dry completely.
Once your pumpkin is completely dry, carefully remove your masking tape from around your pumpkin. If your edges aren’t perfect, don’t fret. We’ll be covering this section with black vinyl next. Set your pumpkin aside while we prep the vinyl pieces.
Using your Cricut, cut two strips of black vinyl at 1.75 in. width and 11 in. height. (My Cricut mat is 12×12, but if yours is longer you may only need to cut one piece of vinyl.) Remove the backing from the vinyl and carefully stick the strips to the middle of the pumpkin, forming a black stripe which covers the unpainted area in the middle. Smooth the vinyl into the ridges of your pumpkin as you add it.
Next, let’s work on the stripes of Captain Marvel’s suit. Cut another strip of black vinyl at 1.5 in. width and 11 in. height. Set aside. Using your gold glitter vinyl, cut two strips at 0.5 in. width by 11 in. height. Carefully remove the backing from the gold vinyl strips and stick them one at a time to the strip of black vinyl you set aside, keeping the same amount of padding between the stripes and the edge of the black vinyl piece.
Take your newly assembled stripes piece and cut it in half, leaving you with two pieces that are 5.5 in. long. Remove the backing of each piece and carefully place them in a “V” shape on your pumpkin. Note — I lined the bottom tip of each of my stripes up with the bottom of the black center stripe on my pumpkin.
Now for the star! Download Captain Marvel’s star (above) and cut it out on black vinyl at 5.5 in. width by 5.472 in. height. Set aside. Next, cut a second star out on gold glitter vinyl at 4.5 in. width by 4.477 in. height. Carefully remove the gold star from its backing, and using transfer tape, stick it in the center of the black vinyl star. Finally, using transfer tape, stick your newly completed star on the center of your pumpkin, covering the bottom edges of your stripe vinyl piece.
That’s it! Ain’t it MARVELOUS?!

I honestly thought it was all painted until I read through the instructions! Now I’m even more impressed. I would love to see you do more or someone take inspiration and make their own. An army of Marvel pumpkins needs to be done – even if it’s mini ones!
