Lord of the Rings is a classic in our home, and this past December, we started a new holiday tradition… watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
LOTR in December? You might not think it’s a Christmas series, however, in some ways, it is. You see, each of the movies was released in theaters in the month of December. The Fellowship of the Ring was released on December 19, 2001; The Two Towers was released on December 18, 2002; and The Return of the King was released on December 17, 2003. When my husband and I were growing up, we both saw the movies (separately) with our families during the holiday times. It became something we both looked forward to each year, and now, we want to make time to continue those memories by watching LOTR together.
This year we watched the extended editions — that’s TIME. Yep, that’s a lot of couch time. TBD if we watch the extended or theatrical version next year… However, regardless of the run time, Lord of the Rings will always have those memorable scenes and lines. I mean, how many memes have you seen with Boromir’s One Does Not Simply phrase… not enough if you ask me.
But more than action and drama, LOTR has romance. And one of my favorite relationships is that of Aragorn and Arwen.
Can we all move to Rivendell and dress in gorgeous gowns now?
This year, as Valentine’s Day approaches, I was inspired to make a new DIY from one of Arwen and Aragorn’s romantic quotes, seen in The Fellowship of the Ring when Arwen gives Aragorn the Evenstar.
Arwen: Do you remember when we first met?
Aragorn: I thought I had strayed into a dream.
And since we are in the process of finishing the decorations for our bedroom, I thought this quote would pair perfectly with a set of minimalist canvas quotes.
DIY: Lord of the Rings Aragorn and Arwen Love Quote Canvas Set
What You Need:
- Black iron-on vinyl
- Two white canvases, 12×24 inches
- Aragorn and Arwen Quotes — Quote 1 DOWNLOAD and Quote 2 DOWNLOAD
- Iron
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Cricut Explore Air II (or a similar machine) and cutting accessories (mat, weeder)
Download the two quote files (found in the list above) and load them into Circuit Design Space.
Size both files at 7 inches wide. Place your iron-on vinyl on your Cricut mat with the plastic side facing down. Note: make sure to mirror your image before cutting, otherwise your image will be backwards when you iron it on the fabric. Cut the first quote using your Cricut, then weed the extra pieces, anything that is not part of the letters, off of your mat. Repeat the process for your second quote.
To help position your quotes on your canvases, use a pencil to *lightly* mark a couple guides where you’d like your quotes placed. On your first canvas, you will place Arwen’s Do You Remember quote in the top left corner. Make several markings 2 inches down from the top and 1 inch in from the left edge to help guide your placement.
Take the plastic piece with the first quote and place it on your canvas, words facing up so that the quote is readable, using your pencil markings to guide its position. Place a thin cloth on top of the plastic and use your hot iron to adhere the design to the canvas. Run your iron over the area for 10-12 seconds at a time, repeating several times. Flip over your canvas, place the cloth on top of it, and then iron the back side. Once the canvas has cooled, slowly pull off the plastic to leave the quote on the fabric. NOTE: due to the canvas fabric, I had to iron my vinyl multiples times before it was ready to fully adhere.
Next, prepare your pencil guides on your second canvas for where you’d like Aragorn’s Dream quote placed. In the bottom right corner, make several markings 2 inches up from the bottom and 1 inch in from the right edge.
Repeat the ironing process to adhere your second quote to the canvas.
And there you have it — the perfect DIY for your geeky valentine.
I love this! What a great idea.

Thanks! We just hung them up this week — now I’m tempted to make others!
One of my besties is the biggest LOTR fan I’ve ever known in my life. She just had an extended edition movie marathon for her birthday last weekend. I wish I had seen this before that. I would’ve made this for her! Maybe I still will – a little late 🙂

That sounds like my kind of birthday celebration! She would love these! Plus, it’s so subtly geeky that it’s the perfect way to add a little LOTR into your home decor.
I haven’t seen the LOTR movies in ages, so I don’t remember this quote at all, but it is super beautiful. I’m thinking a movie marathon with my BF is in the near future ☺️

I definitely support that idea! We really enjoyed re-watching these movies in December.
Ohhhhhh my. This is amazing. Big LOTR fan here. I’ve wanted one of those 2 canvas quote signs above our bed and couldn’t decide on a quote. This is perfect!!
