Frozen 2 Brings Adventure, Growth, and Musical Ballads [MOVIE REVIEW]

One week ago, I walked the red carpet at the Frozen 2 premiere and watched Frozen 2 with the cast and crew in LA!

It was quite honestly an amazing experience and you can read all about it here. After walking out of the theater, a few things happened — I sang THREE WORDS of the new Frozen 2 jam “Into the Unknown” OVER AND OVER again in my head — can you guess what three words they were? — and I began dreaming of the day when I could watch Frozen 2 again!

I loved it (potentially just as much as the first one, but I need to see it a second time before I officially make that declaration!), and that’s saying something because I adore the first Frozen (read why in my red carpet recap).

Are you excited to see Frozen 2 in theaters on November 22? Read on for reasons to be excited, and I promise, no plot spoilers!

Elsa Goes Into the Unknown

Adventure is out there! Oops, wrong movie. But seriously there is adventure (and danger) at every turn as Elsa heads into the unknown looking to find the truth behind the source of her powers. And with her journey comes a new, darker edge to the story. (Oh, and she sings a few ballads along the way.)

Olaf Steals the Show (Again)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Olaf is my favorite. I’ll admit, when I first saw the trailers for Frozen 2, I was a little nervous the Olaf humor would be abused in this film and taken to the extreme, but the writers and Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf, nailed it! I’m in love with this little snowman even more (which I didn’t think was possible).

Kristoff Gets His Own Song

I always felt a little bad that Kristoff didn’t get his own musical number in the first Frozen. Sure, he had the “Reindeer(s) Are Better Than People” song, but it’s less than a minute long and at least half of it is sung in his Sven (his reindeer) voice — so it doesn’t fully count. Frozen 2 brings a whole new light to Kristoff’s character, and his song, no, his ballad, is unlike any Frozen song ever sung. Believe me, you’ll know when you see it/hear it! And you will love it.

Anna Gains Her Independence

The youngest sister is growing up. And independence and assertiveness looks good on Anna! For me, this is a welcome change to see Anna go from the girl who got engaged after meeting a man that same day (yes, really, remember Hans?), to now growing into a confident woman who is fiercely protective of her sister and her kingdom Arendelle.

The Music Captures Hearts (and Ears)

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have done it again. Their amazing songwriting has brought soon-to-be hits to the screen, and with the vocal talent of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff, there’s no question that Frozen 2’s music is as good as the songs in the original Frozen!

Overall Thoughts

After reading this review, it should come as no surprise — I loved Frozen 2. Throughout this new adventure going Into the Unknown, each character is faced with challenging circumstances which, in the end, empower their character development and allow the audience to identify with each of them on a new level. While I loved each character in Frozen, Frozen 2 is darker (in a good way) and brings a new perspective to the series.

The music was simply amazing. And, yes, you better believe I’ll be adding the soundtrack to my playlist as soon as I can. I’m letting go of Let It Go and headed Into the Unknown of Frozen 2’s melodies.

Should You See Frozen 2 In Theaters?

Absolutely YES. You will not want to miss seeing this (truly) epic adventure on the big screen.

Is Frozen 2 Better Than the First Frozen?

I hate questions like this! But… I’m prepared to say that Frozen 2 is just as good as Frozen. While Frozen holds a special place in my heart, Frozen 2 is different and brings a new edge to the screen.

About Frozen 2

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In Frozen, Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In Frozen 2, she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®- winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen 2 opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2019.

This makes me even more excited! I already have my tickets for Friday. I love Frozen and I was a little nervous the sequel might not measure up. I’m also super excited for Kristoff to get his own song – Jonathan Groff is amazing!
