A couple weekends ago, I made a big batch of sugar cookie dough and made four different types of decorated creations! My first batch was inspired by Mister Rogers and his cozy cardigans. And for the second batch, I made some fun Hobbit door cookies!
You see, with spring approaching, I’ve had The Shire on my mind! This past weekend I spent time watching The Fellowship of the Ring, and I also created this DIY Second Breakfast Sign for my breakfast nook!
Whether you love The Lord of the Rings trilogy or The Hobbit, there’s no doubt you enjoy The Shire.
“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”
-The Hobbit
Not only are these Lord of the Rings cookies incredibly easy, they also are so cute! And the perfect snack for your spring gathering or LOTR/Hobbit movie night.

What You Need:
- Round sugar cookies (here’s a recipe I love to use for sugar cookies)
- 2 sticks of salted butter, room temperature
- 1 lb. of powdered sugar (half of a bag)
- 1 tsp. of vanilla extract
- 2-3 tbsp. milk
- Food coloring — green
- Chocolate chips
- 2 icing bags
- 2 icing couplers
- Icing tips — rigged basketweave tip, small round tip
Prepare your favorite sugar cookie dough and color it green with food coloring. Cut your cookies out with a round cookie cutter (or just use a glass). Need a sugar cookie recipe? Here’s one I often use. Bake according to your recipe and let the cookies cool prior to decorating.
Next prepare your buttercream icing. While cookies aren’t always iced with buttercream, but more commonly royal icing, I chose to use buttercream since I knew it would easily hold the “wood panel” design I was after. (And it’s also delicious!)
Using a stand or hand mixer, first beat the softened butter (I let my stand mixer go for several minutes until the butter mixture is creamy). Then add the vanilla and a tablespoon or so of milk until blended and smooth. Slowly add your powdered sugar until all of it is incorporated. Next, add an additional tablespoon of milk or so, if needed, until you reach your desired frosting consistency. Taste test to be sure it’s perfect!
First, scoop out a small amount of white icing and place it in a prepared icing bag with a small round icing tip. Set aside.
Color your remaining buttercream green with food coloring, then place it in a prepared icing bag with the ridged basketweave tip.
Ice a straight line of green icing down the middle of your cookie. Work your way to the outer edge of the cookie, adding more icing lines until the cookie is fully iced.
To clean up your edges, if needed, use a napkin to remove/smooth the excess icing around the perimeter.
Add a chocolate chip to the center of the cookie, tip facing down, for the door knob.
Optional, if you’re looking to welcome a party of dwarves to your cookie party, use your white icing to ice to mark the door, letting the world know you’re a “burglar in search of a job.”
These cookies are so cute!
