This Saturday is the 45th anniversary of JAWS! And I’m celebrating with a no-bake pie (perfect for a hot summer day!) inspired by the movie. Trust me, you’ll want to take a bite out of this one. 🙂

My mom loves JAWS, so it’s no surprise that I grew up watching it. We even re-watched it this past weekend during our girls’ night, and we both agreed — that shark still makes us jump out of our chairs!

With Fourth of July right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to head to Amity for a movie night — paired with a delicious JAWS-inspired pie… I think we’re gonna need a bigger fork.

About JAWS

When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town’s chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. Featuring an unforgettable score by John Williams that evokes pure terror, JAWS remains one of the most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.

JAWS-themed Pie

What You Need:

Jaws Pie Decoration

  • Pre-made refrigerated pie crust, one roll (for the shark decoration)
  • Clear vanilla extract
  • Food coloring — blue, black, and red
  • Paring knife
  • Parchment paper
  • Small brushes for decorating
  • JAWS image for reference (I used the one above)
  • Scissors
  • Baking sheet
  • White royal icing (prepared in a icing bag)
  • Blue sprinkles

No-Bake Jell-O Pie

  • 3 oz. Berry blue Jell-O
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. of ice cold water
  • 8 oz. Cool Whip, thawed
  • Pre-made graham cracker crust in pie pan

Decorating Your Shark Design

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

To start, print out the JAWS poster (found in the list above) and cut out the shape of the shark, the inside of its mouth, and the the outer piece of the mouth (aka the shark’s “chin”). Using a paring knife, cut out each shape from your pre-made pie crust, using your stencil to cleanly trace the shape.

Place the largest piece, which will serve as the base of your design, on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. In a shot glass or small bowl, mix clear vanilla extract with blue food coloring, then use it to “paint” your shark blue with a food-safe brush.

Next, place the inside mouth of the shark on your larger shark base (previously colored blue). Then, use black food coloring to “paint” it black. (I did not mix the black food coloring with vanilla.)

Next, add the outer piece of the mouth (aka the shak’s “chin”) at the bottom of the shark decoration you are assembling. Use the remaining vanilla food coloring mixed with blue food coloring to “paint” it blue”, then trim the excess pieces off, if needed, so the shark has a clean, even edge.

Using excess pie crust, roll out two small pieces for the shark’s eyes, then paint them with black food coloring and add on either side of its head.

Cut out the JAWS letters from remaining pie crust, then “paint” the pieces with red food coloring. (I did not mix the red food coloring with vanilla.)

Place your decorated pie crust pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes. (Note – you will “glue” the JAWS letters to the shark once it is done baking with royal icing.) Once removed from the oven, set aside to cool.

To complete your JAWS pie crust decoration, use royal icing to carefully “glue” your JAWS letters onto the mouth of the shark. For the finishing touch, add teeth to the shark’s mouth with white royal icing.

Preparing Your Jell-O Pie

In a mixing bowl, combine your berry blue Jell-O mix with 1/2 c. boiling water. Mix well, then add in 1 c. of ice cold water and stir until slightly thickened.

Next, mix in an 8 oz. container of thawed Cool Whip. Once you’ve reached a smooth consistency, pour the blue mixture into a pie pan lined in graham cracker crust. Place the pie in the refrigerator to chill for 4-6 hours (or place in the freezer to speed up the process).

Once your pie has set, carefully place your shark decoration on top. Add blue sprinkles around the shark and along the edge of the pie to create a nice frame.
